WEEKEND IS JUNE 10-11, 2023!South Hawthorne Waterfront park1403 S Harbor Way, Portland, OR 97201Time: 8:00 AM – 3:00 PM
The Rose Festival is proud to host the Portland Rose Festival Dragon Boat Races, an event that has been bringing an exciting Chinese tradition to Portland for more than two decades, beginning in 1989.
The PKSCA presents the Portland Rose Festival Dragon Boat race annually. The race is free and open to the public. This race involves around 45 teams, Women’s, Mixed, and High School, racing in the traditional-style Dragon Boats from Taiwan. Each race has 4 teams compete by sprinting 500m down the Willamette River ending at the bowl where their flag catcher reaches out from the dragon’s head to capture their flag. Saturday’s heats define the playoff bracket, and Sunday is when they compete for their medals.
The opening ceremony is Saturday, 8 am on June 10th. Races run from 8:30 am till around 3 pm Saturday and Sunday. The awards ceremony takes place around 3:30 on Sunday. Come enjoy Race weekend with us, there will be vendors, and many exciting races for all to enjoy on the waterfront at 1403 S Harbor Way, Portland, OR 97201.
The Dragon Boat Race is held on the Willamette River near the Hawthorne Bridge, the races feature exciting four-team heats held every nine minutes. More than 60 different teams – local, national and international – compete in boats graciously provided through the Portland-Kaohsiung Sister City Association.
This event is FREE to the public.
All About Portland’s Official Festival!
Founded in 1907, The Portland Rose Festival Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Part of Portland’s popular culture for more than a century, the Rose Festival has its roots in tradition while its programming is both contemporary and nostalgic. In 1907, foresighted city leaders started the festival to put Portland on the map and brand it the ‘summer capital of the world.’ More than a hundred summers later, the Rose Festival continues to be world famous for its amazing, award-winning events, as well as serving as a community leader for celebrating values like volunteerism, patriotism and environmentalism. In 2010, the Rose Festival was finally acknowledged as Portland’s Official Festival by proclamation of the Portland City Council. In 2020, the Rose Festival took the lead in the events industry by offering ways for the community to celebrate from home – lifting spirits and bringing cheer to neighborhoods – with Parading in Place events and programs. The Rose Festival continues to evolve to meet the changing needs of the community, and always aspires to make Portland a better place to live and visit.
